What I Want My City Year to Know Next Year

Here at the Point CDC After School Program, we have a staff of dedicated 17-24 year old corps members from City Year New York who work with our students to help them succeed. These staff members work with us for only a year, allowing us to have a new staff every year. Today, we asked our after school students to tell us what they would like their new City Year corps member to know about the kids, staff, rules, and culture of The Point CDC. Here are their thoughts!

“I like to play soccer and eat pizza! Like a Boss!!” :-)
- Christopher, 3rd Grade

“I like pizza!”
- Alex, 3rd Grade

“I am really energetic, helpful, and really funny.”
- Joel, 3rd Grade

“I am energetic and love to play. I am a really good reader and really funny. I love going to the store. There’s a really good salad at the cafe (Bascom Catering). It costs $5, and it’s good. They serve anything you want because they can make it. I love having City Years that are funny and like to go outside. Next year, when I’m in 4th grade, I want the City Year to take us outside so we can exercise and be more helpful. It would be fun!”
- Lucas, 3rd Grade

“I’m hungry all of the time. I like to do fun things and play outside.”
- Destiny, 2nd Grade

“I want them to be nice to us.”
- Khya, 2nd Grade

“Be adaptable, hard-working, and fill our boots.”
- Ms. Camay, City Year

“Remember to believe in the power of young people.”
- Ms. Emily, City Year

“I am a very creative person, artistic, and funny. The Point is a great place for people like me who have trouble making friends and want to be in a safe space.”
-Taysean, 4th Grade

“I am friendly, and I have lots of nice friends.”
- Phoebe, 4th Grade

“City Years are people we respect and help with our problems.”
- Daniel, 4th Grade

“You have to treat people nicely, be responsible, and let people get something from the cafe when they get their homework out.”
- Jose, 1st Grade

“I am friendly and sassy.”
- Jala, 4th Grade

“I’m more science-based than most kids.”
- Michael, 6th Grade

”I like to color and read. Let me do what I want to do! Also, let me help people when they’re done with their homework. I can help Group A when I am bigger.”
- Sali, 1st Grade

“I want them to know what kind of food I like.”
-Angelique, 1st Grade

“Remember the power of play!” :-)

-M.C.

Best of luck to next year’s City Year team!

To BE or NOT to BE! Shakespeare Festival to come to NY?

For decades school kids in the Los Angeles region have been competing annually in the Shakespeare Festival. Bringing their own unique visions to the works of one of the greatest playwrights ever to have lived.  Each year school children from various districts converge and compete to the death (well not really death) but for top prizes in numerous categories.

The LA festival, being lead in the past by Open Hydrants Rosie Rosenberg, this past weekend Rosie and members from Open Hydrant and representatives from numerous high schools throughout the city met at Lincoln Center to discuss bringing the festival here to NYC for kids from all over to come and compete.

Attendees were treated to performances by a few of Open Hydrants young members who blew the crowd away with their talent.

For more information on the festival you can catch it on Netflix as it was featured in the documentary “Shakespeare High” executive produced by Kevin Spacey.

Keep coming back for more details.

THEARTOFLYRICS turns 4 years old this upcoming April 19, 2013 and is celebrating by hosting it’s first massive Open Mic Special.  In 2009, the Bronx had no regular space for real MC’s and DJ’s to showcase their talents, Peasant Podium stepped up the plate and created what is now the longest running underground showcase in the boro of the birthplace.

In 4 years, THEARTOFLYRICS live experience has put well over 200 MC’s on the bill and showcased and promoted their art via their website and youtube page.  In an era where egos and self-service reigns supreme, the Peasant Podium team has humbly worked with local/foreign, new/old, & female/male acts to keep culture alive in the Bronx under one premise, that these folks exemplify a simple standard - THEARTOFLYRICS.
